Description
Painted in 1872, this winter scene shows a stand of bare trees and shrubs dusted with snow, their dark trunks and tangled branches filling the left half of the canvas. Through the thinning trees on the right, the pale walls and rooftops of a village emerge beneath a soft, hazy blue-grey sky. Renoir renders the snow-covered ground in broken touches of white, grey and pale ochre, with hints of green showing through where the cover is thin. The muted, wintry palette and loose brushwork give the quiet scene an airy, atmospheric quality. The painting is held today at the Musee de l’Orangerie in Paris.
Available as a museum-quality canvas or fine-art print, made to order, its soft, muted tones make it a calming choice for a hallway, study, or any room that could use a wintry hush.
