Description
A sunlit garden path winds between dense clusters of trees, their canopies built from layered touches of gold, green, and pale blue sky glimpsed through the leaves. Small figures dot the path: a woman and child in the distance, and closer to the viewer a group of adults and children gathered together, the women in pale dresses and one figure in a bright red coat providing a vivid accent against the greenery.
Renoir handles the whole scene with quick, broken strokes, letting patches of warm yellow sunlight fall across the ochre path and mix with cool blue-green shadow. A red-and-white striped awning and rooftops are just visible through the trees at the upper left, hinting at houses bordering the garden without describing them in detail.
Held at the Ashmolean Museum, this 1895 garden scene from the Montmartre hillside is available as a wall art reproduction. A Garden in Montmartre can be printed on museum-quality canvas in a range of sizes, made to order and shipped worldwide.
