Description
A lush garden path leads back toward a whitewashed cottage with a thick, russet-colored thatched roof, its walls glimpsed through an archway of green. In the middle distance, a woman and child pause near a white garden bench, their forms sketched in loose, almost linear strokes as if still being worked out, while at the right a woman in a long green skirt and straw hat walks away from the viewer down the sunlit path.
Renoir fills the left half of the canvas with a dense, feathery tree in blue-green foliage, its branches arching over the scene, and lets warm ochre light spill across the dirt path at the center. The handling throughout is loose and exploratory, mixing thin washes of color with quick pen-like outlines around the figures and bench.
Painted in 1886, this Breton garden scene is available as a wall art reproduction. Au Jardin en Bretagne can be printed on museum-quality canvas in a range of sizes, made to order and shipped worldwide.
