Description
A dense cluster of roses fills the canvas edge to edge: full-blown pink and salmon blooms mix with pale cream-white roses and soft yellow-green foliage, all set against a warm, glowing pink-red ground. No vase or table is visible, only the flowers themselves, pressed close together.
Renoir builds each bloom from thick, swirling strokes of paint, the petals barely distinguishable from one another at the centre of the bouquet, so the whole surface reads as a single warm mass of colour. It is a late, freely handled still life, painted with visible pleasure in the paint itself.
This Roses still life is reproduced as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, after the original held at the Musee des Beaux-Arts et d’Archeologie de Besancon, measuring 27 x 30 cm. It is a reproduction.
