Description
Seen from behind, a young woman bends forward at the edge of a garden pool, gathering a large white cloth around her hips as she steps out of the water. Her auburn hair is pinned up, leaving the nape of her neck and the curve of her bare back and shoulders as the luminous center of the canvas, painted in warm ivory and rose tones.
Renoir surrounds her with a loosely brushed screen of greens, from deep olive shadow to touches of golden and blue, so that the figure seems to emerge from foliage rather than stand apart from it. The white drapery is built up in thick, confident strokes that catch the light, a striking contrast to the soft, almost dissolved handling of the wooded setting behind her.
This intimate After the Bath scene, held at the Barnes Foundation, is reproduced here as a made-to-order canvas print in a range of sizes up to large formats, shipped worldwide for a bedroom, bath, or reading nook.
