Description
Four roses are gathered against a dark, shadowy ground: a large open pink bloom at upper left, a smaller red-orange bud beside it, and two paler yellow-cream roses below, their petals loosely brushed and only partly resolved. Touches of green foliage show through the darkness near the stems.
The dark olive and brown background pushes the flowers forward, their petals built from confident, economical strokes of pink, coral and pale yellow. Painted late in Renoir’s life, the roses have a soft, almost weightless quality, more suggested than described in detail.
This Roses still life is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, after the original, painted in 1917 and held at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. It is a reproduction, not the museum’s painting.
