Description
Tall bulrushes and reeds fill most of the canvas, their blades painted in overlapping greens shading into rust and deep red-brown at the base, as if lit from behind by low sun. Beyond them, the Seine lies calm and silvery, with a low, tree-lined far bank under a soft grey sky.
The reeds are built from long, sweeping, almost calligraphic strokes, while the river and sky are laid in with much smoother, hazier touches of lavender-grey and pale gold. The contrast between the dense, textured foreground and the quiet distance is the heart of the picture.
Roseaux sur les rives de la Seine is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print. No museum or dimensions were recorded for this early Renoir riverscape.
