Description
A small child is shown with head bowed and gaze cast downward, a bright red ribbon tied into the reddish-gold hair at the crown. The face is rendered with warm, glowing pink in the cheeks and lips, the eyes nearly closed as the child looks down toward the chest, giving the portrait a shy, inward mood rather than a posed, forward gaze. Loose strands of hair fall around the ears in soft golden and copper strokes.
The child wears a loose smock patterned in pale blue and white, its sleeves and collar built from quick, broken strokes of sky blue, mint and white that read as gathered, ruffled fabric rather than a flat surface. Behind, Renoir sets a warm ochre and brown ground on the left against a cooler streak of green on the right, the contrast pushing the soft pastel clothing and flushed skin forward.
This portrait, held at the São Paulo Museum of Art, is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print. It is a reproduction, not the original painting.
