Description

A full-length figure stands facing the viewer, a small child balanced on her hip and wrapped snugly in dark cloth with a white headscarf that echoes the mother’s own veil. Both faces are turned slightly toward the viewer with the same calm, direct expression, and the woman’s flowing white and lilac garment billows out at the hem over dark slippers.

Renoir builds the robe from long, streaky strokes of white, violet, and pale gold that catch the light of an open, sun-baked landscape behind her, painted in loose dabs of ochre, terracotta, and sage green. There is little detail in the background beyond suggested scrub and warm earth, keeping all the attention on the pair at the center of the canvas.
