Description
Three women fill a richly patterned interior in this 1872 Orientalist scene: a central figure reclines in loose, gauzy robes and gold jewelry while a companion beside her fastens a necklace, and a young attendant in a striped skirt looks on from the right. Renoir builds the room from a warm haze of ochre, umber and brown, broken by red slippers and a flowered carpet scattered with bracelets at their feet.
The pose and setting recall the Orientalist fashion popular in 1870s Paris, staged in the studio rather than observed abroad, and the mood is one of quiet, unhurried intimacy rather than spectacle.
Our giclee reproduction holds onto that warm, smoky palette, from the deep browns of the background to the flashes of red and gold in the jewelry, on archival canvas or fine-art paper, ready to hang in several sizes.
