Description
Jacques Bergeret as a Child is a close portrait of a young child with a mop of curly reddish-blond hair and large dark eyes looking directly at the viewer. The child wears a pale, sleeveless dress with straps tied in small blue bows at each shoulder, and the bare arms and rounded cheeks are painted with soft pink touches.
Renoir surrounds the child with a deep maroon-red background, its rich, brushy colour making the fair hair and pale dress glow by contrast. The paint is applied loosely around the edges but built up with more care in the face, giving the child’s gaze a direct, lively presence.
Painted in 1880 and held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the canvas measures 41 by 32.1 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, available in a range of sizes to suit a nursery, a hallway, or a larger wall.
