Description

This small 1890 sketch, only 10.5 by 8.5 centimetres, captures a young girl’s head in profile, her reddish-brown hair gathered into a simple knot at the back.

Renoir works quickly and loosely, using warm pink strokes for her cheek and jaw against a pale, undefined grey ground, with a touch of yellow suggesting a garment at her shoulder. Left unfinished at the edges, the sketch reads as a rapid, direct study rather than a completed portrait.
