Description
Girls with Hats brings two young girls close together in a half-length composition dominated by their headwear. Behind, a girl wears a large white hat wrapped with a bold orange-red ribbon and a matching rosette, her face turned away and largely hidden beneath the wide brim. In front, a second girl with long brown hair wears a smaller straw hat and a pink and white dress, her head tilted down and to the side.
Renoir paints the white hat with thick, sweeping strokes that catch the light on its ribbon and trim, while the girl’s face in front is modelled more softly, in warm pinks and creams. A hazy blue background sets off both hats, keeping the focus on the interplay of white, orange and straw yellow across the top of the canvas.
Held at the Barnes Foundation, the canvas measures 41.3 by 32.4 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes to suit a small wall or a larger display.
