Description

A wide bay opens across the whole width of the canvas, its water shifting between deep blue and jade green under a pale, cloud-streaked sky. On the far shore, a hillside town climbs up from the water’s edge, its white and ochre houses clustered around a tall church tower, with green hills and blue mountains rising behind it.

Scattered across the harbor are small boats: a white-sailed yacht catches the light near the center of the water, a smaller sail shows farther off, and a couple of plain rowboats sit moored close to shore, one of them pale yellow and clearly reflected in the calm water beneath it. In the lower right corner, a lone figure in dark blue stands on the sandy foreground bank, looking out toward the bay, giving the wide scene a single, small human scale.

The paint is applied in loose, confident patches rather than fine detail: the town is a cluster of short dabs suggesting rooftops and walls rather than describing them, the hills behind are broad sweeps of green and blue-violet, and the water is built from horizontal strokes of blue, teal, and white that catch the reflected light of the sails.

The palette leans cooler and more silvery than Renoir’s garden and portrait work, blues and greens carrying the whole picture with only the warm ochre foreground and the pale clouds breaking that coolness. It’s a straightforward view down onto open water and a distant town, closer to a plein-air landscape note than a peopled genre scene.

As wall art the picture has real breathing room: a calm horizontal expanse of blue-green water anchored by the small white sails and the pale town on the horizon, the kind of scene that reads instantly from across a room and rewards a closer look at the loose, sketchy handling of the boats.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.
