Description
This 1883 canvas shows the same holiday group as Renoir’s other Guernsey beach picture, but pulled back to reveal the full rocky cove: jagged tan and violet cliffs enclose a bay where the sea churns in bands of turquoise and deep blue, with small figures wading in the surf further out. In the foreground, a cluster of children occupies the shore, a girl in a plumed hat and white dress with two younger children close by, another in a pale pink dress and yellow bonnet, and boys in sailor suits sitting and crouching on the pebbled beach. Painted during Renoir’s stay on the Channel Island, it is now held by the Barnes Foundation. The wider view gives more weight to the dramatic coastal rock formations that framed his Guernsey summer.
Reproduced here as a museum-quality wall-art print, this composition is available on canvas or fine-art paper, made to order in the size and finish that suit your room.
