Description
A young bather sits on a rock at the water’s edge, dark hair drawn back, her body turned three-quarters away as she bends to touch her raised foot. A white cloth is bunched beneath her, and behind her a flat expanse of blue sea fills most of the canvas, broken only by a warm brown outcrop of rock at the left.
Painted around 1882, the figure is modelled with smooth, careful shading rather than the broken brushwork Renoir used for his later bathers, giving the skin an almost sculptural finish against the plain blue ground. The print keeps that contrast between the softly rounded figure and the flat, unbroken sea behind her, so the bather still reads as the clear centre of the canvas.
