Description
Seen from behind and turned three-quarters toward us, a red-haired bather glances down over her shoulder, one hand gripping a slender tree trunk beside her. A white cloth is bunched beneath her, and through the trees behind, a strip of blue lake catches the light.
Painted in 1911 and held by the Barnes Foundation, the canvas (82 by 66 cm) uses that gripped branch to anchor an otherwise soft, rounded pose, giving the figure a moment of physical support rather than pure repose. The print keeps the pale blue of the lake glimpsed clearly through the foliage, a small cool note against the warm body and forest.
