Description
Jeune femme au chignon shows a young woman with auburn hair gathered into a high bun, looking out over her shoulder with a calm, direct gaze. She wears a black shawl-like collar over a cream-coloured blouse, set against a streaked background of blue, green, and soft yellow. The painting is left unfinished below the shoulders: her arms and clasped hands are only indicated in loose pencil lines over bare, unpainted canvas.
Renoir fully resolves the face and hair with soft, blended strokes of pink, cream, and auburn, while the rest of the composition remains in a sketch-like state, showing the underlying drawing normally hidden beneath finished paint. This contrast between the finished head and the bare canvas below gives a rare view into how Renoir built up a portrait.
Painted in 1882, this work is reproduced as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes to suit a small wall or a larger room.
