Description

A dark-haired woman in a voluminous white dress sits half-turned, holding a small book or letter up close to read. A black drop earring and a tiny red flower tucked into her hair are the only dark accents against her pale, luminous skin, and her gaze is lowered in quiet absorption.

Her dress dominates the lower half of the canvas in long, sweeping strokes of white, grey, and pale blue, the fabric pooling loosely at her feet. Behind her, a laid table draped in a patterned cloth is sketched in quick dark touches, and a warm reddish-brown wall or curtain closes off the top of the composition, framing her figure in a cocoon of rich, dark color.
