Description
In a sunlit garden clearing, five young women take part in a game of battledore and shuttlecock. One stands at the left in a mustard yellow dress holding a wooden racket, watching a companion in a rose pink gown who has just struck the shuttlecock overhead with an outstretched arm.
In the foreground three more girls in pale blue and cream dresses rest together on a grassy bank, one leaning on her hand, a red parasol lying folded in the grass beside them. Renoir builds the whole scene from loose, sunlit strokes of green, framed by trees at the left and open sky and distant hills beyond.
The painting is part of the collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art. What is offered here is not that original but a faithful reproduction: a hand-painted oil version on canvas, or an archival canvas print made with fade-resistant pigment inks, available in a range of sizes to suit any wall.
