Description

Jeune fille lisant, esquisse shows a young woman seen from behind and slightly to the side, absorbed in an open book held up in front of her. She wears a wide straw hat with a pink ribbon, an orange-red jacket, and a light yellow dress with fluttering ribbons at the shoulder, set against a background of dense green and teal foliage.

Renoir builds the whole sketch with rapid, energetic strokes, the orange jacket laid on in thick vertical dashes against the cooler greens behind her. The book’s pages are rendered as a few bold strokes of white and grey, and the loose, unblended brushwork throughout gives the picture the freshness of a quick outdoor study rather than a finished portrait.
