Description
Seen from behind, a woman in an orange straw hat and a loose white blouse sits amid a garden dissolved into color. Renoir paints the foliage around her as thick dabs of green, gold, and rust, with a pale blue sky breaking through at the top of the canvas, so the landscape reads more as shimmering pattern than as distinct trees and shrubs.
This is late Renoir at his loosest, the figure barely more defined than the plants surrounding her, built from the same warm, feathery strokes that unify the whole small canvas. The effect is of dappled outdoor light rather than a fixed scene, the woman’s back and hat catching the same golden glow as the greenery.
Available as a hand-painted oil reproduction or an archival canvas print, made to order in sizes true to the small original proportions, held at the Barnes Foundation.
