Description
A woman in a wide-brimmed hat striped in pink and blue leans forward on one arm, her gaze turned to the side beneath the hat’s shadow. A thin gold necklace rests against her bare neck above a loose white chemise, and beside her a vase overflowing with pink and yellow roses fills the upper left of the canvas.
Renoir paints the whole scene in warm, blended tones of peach, rose, and cream, the flowers echoing the soft pink of her skin and hat. The brushwork is fluid and unbroken, giving the portrait a relaxed, glowing intimacy typical of his later work.
Held today at the Barnes Foundation, this painting is available as a hand-painted oil reproduction or an archival canvas print, made to order in sizes that keep the original’s proportions, close to a 33.5 x 41.5 cm ratio, so the composition reads as Renoir intended.
