Description
A crowd of Parisians crosses a street under a canopy of open umbrellas, their blue-grey domes overlapping all the way to the back of the picture. In the foreground, a young woman in a fitted dark dress walks forward with a basket on her arm, unprotected by any umbrella of her own, while behind her a mother in a feathered hat gathers a small girl and boy, one of them holding a wooden hoop, close beside her.
Painted over several years in the early 1880s and now in London’s National Gallery, the canvas measures about 180.3 x 114.9 cm and shows Renoir shifting from the warm, loose Impressionist handling of his earlier crowd scenes toward cooler, more tightly drawn figures, visible in the crisp outlines of the children’s clothing compared to the softer umbrellas above.
The print holds onto that cool wash of blues and greys against the small warm notes of skin and hair, reproduced as a giclée on canvas or fine-art paper. It comes in multiple sizes, ready to hang in an entryway or living space.
