Description

A woman sits back into a couch with her eyes almost closed, one arm lifted so her hand supports her head. Her dark hair is drawn back. A white and grey patterned cloth is wound round her hips and falls between her knees, and her other hand rests on it. On her feet are soft slippers striped in blue and yellow.

Renoir keys the whole room to heat. Yellow green cushions bank up behind her, and beyond them curtain and wall run through orange, scarlet and rose with almost no cool colour anywhere except the slippers and the cloth. The figure is not so much lit as warmed.

Painted in 1916 and held by the Musee d’Orsay, at 50 by 53 centimetres it is very nearly square, which is unusual for him and pushes the figure forward against the picture plane.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sizes are available?

You choose the short edge, from 30 up to 150 centimetres; the other edge is derived from the proportions of this painting itself, so the picture is never trimmed to fit. Each option is listed in centimetres and inches. The original measures 50 by 53 centimetres, very nearly square, and an original-size option reproduces those dimensions exactly.

Which medium can I choose?

Either of two reproductions; the original hangs in the Musee d'Orsay and is not for sale. The default is a hand-painted oil reproduction, painted in oils on canvas. The alternative is a canvas art print. You then choose the finish: rolled, stretched on a chassis, or set in a thin or a thick frame.

How is it delivered?

It is made for your order in the size, medium and finish you choose. The production time for the medium you pick is shown with the options on this page, and shipping is calculated at checkout for your delivery address.
