Description
Painted in 1880, this life-size portrait shows a young woman asleep in a red armchair, her head tipped back against the cushion and a straw hat trimmed with pink flowers still perched on her dark hair. She wears a loose white chemise that has slipped off one shoulder, one hand resting on a grey tabby cat curled asleep in her lap, striped blue stockings and shoes showing beneath her rumpled blue skirt. Renoir sets the scene against warm ochre floorboards and a dusky teal-green wall, letting the red of the chair and the blues of the skirt carry the color. Sometimes titled Sleeping Girl with a Cat, the painting is held today at the Clark Art Institute.
This reproduction brings that drowsy afternoon warmth to a museum-quality canvas or fine-art print, made to order in a range of sizes and finishes for your wall.
At over a meter tall in the original, the composition suits a bedroom or reading corner particularly well, though it reproduces just as comfortably at smaller sizes.
