Description

A small horizontal still life, arranged along a single shallow band. A red earthenware pan sits at the back with a dark rim and its handle turned to the right. In front of it, from the left: a large green apple with a russet flush, a yellow lemon, a dark green cucumber laid flat, and at the right a yellow orange oblong fruit.

A sprig of pink flowers lies on the white cloth at the far left, the only thing in the picture that is not food. The background is pale cream and barely worked, so nothing competes with the row of objects.

Dated 1885. The format is unusually wide for its height, which turns the group into a frieze and makes each object read separately rather than as a heap.
