Description
Mossy, rust-coloured rocks fill the foreground of this coastal scene, their surfaces streaked with green, ochre and dark red. Beyond them, a wide stretch of pale sand or shallow tide flat opens onto the sea, where a scattering of small figures wade and stoop, gathering shrimp at low tide.
Renoir dissolves the distance into a soft, hazy blue-grey, sea and sky barely distinguishable from one another, so that the sharpest colour and texture stay reserved for the rocks nearest the viewer. The figures are reduced to a few quick touches of yellow, red and blue, more a sense of activity than individual portraits.
This piece is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, a reproduction of Renoir’s original coastal scene rather than the original painting.
