Description
A cove on Guernsey opens beneath golden, sun-baked rocks, its turquoise and deep blue water flecked with white foam. Along the pale strip of beach, several bathers in light summer dress wade and stand at the water’s edge, small in scale against the cliffs and sea around them.
Renoir loads the rocks with thick, buttery strokes of yellow, ochre and orange, set against the cooler blues and greens of the sea, and finishes the figures in quick touches of white, pink and blue. The surface has the loose, sun-struck energy typical of his Channel Island paintings.
This work is reproduced as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, after the original, which measures 46.2 x 55.8 cm. It is a reproduction; no museum location was recorded for the source painting.
