Description

A nude woman lies stretched out on a grassy hillside, seen from behind, her arms raised to hold her long braided hair off her neck. Her eyes are closed and her face turned in profile, giving the whole pose a sense of ease and warmth rather than display, as if she were simply resting in the sun.

Renoir models her back and hip in smooth, luminous white and pink tones that stand out sharply against the loosely brushed hillside beneath her, painted in strokes of rust, gold and green. Beyond the slope, a strip of blue sea meets a lightly clouded sky, the water rendered in quick horizontal dashes of blue that echo the coolness of her skin.
