Description

A man in formal dark dress sits turned slightly to the side, his gaze directed off to the left. He has short dark hair and a neat moustache, and wears a dark suit jacket and waistcoat over a crisp white shirt with a high collar, finished with a dark cravat pinned at the throat and a gold ring visible on his resting hand.

The setting is kept dim and simple, a deep brownish-red curtain and a hint of gold drapery filling the background so that all the light falls on his face and the bright white of his shirt front. The paint is handled with restraint, smooth on the face and hands and broader and darker across the suit, in keeping with a formal, traditional portrait sitting.

This portrait is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas, made by hand to recreate its dark, formal palette, or as an archival giclee canvas print from a high-resolution image. Both are reproductions for your home, not the original painting.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes are available for this reproduction?

This portrait is offered in a range of standard reproduction sizes to suit different walls. No confirmed measurements survive for the original, so sizing follows the painting's proportions as seen in the image rather than an exact original scale.

Is this a hand-painted reproduction or a print?

You can choose either. Our hand-painted oil reproductions are painted on canvas by an artist to recreate the restrained, formal brushwork of the original. Our archival giclee canvas prints use pigment inks on canvas. Neither is the original painting.

How is my order produced and delivered?

Every order is made to order and shipped worldwide, arriving stretched and ready to hang. Hand-painted oil reproductions take longer to produce than canvas prints, since each one is painted individually by hand.
