Description
Renoir looks down a broad Paris quay from slightly above. A tall pale stone building with iron balconies and a shop front closes the left, followed by a terrace of facades receding to the centre, with a row of tall street lamps down the pavement. On the right, a line of leafy trees, and beyond them a low parapet with stalls and a glimpse of water.
The road is full of people, all painted at the size of a fingernail and all legible: dark coated men in top hats, women in long skirts, two soldiers side by side in dark tunics and red trousers, a white horse away in the distance. At the lower right a black carriage with its driver, and a rider in a red cap on a brown horse.
The sky is thick cream and white cloud with two patches of blue let through. He signed at the lower right, A. Renoir. Dated 1874, the year of the first Impressionist exhibition.
