Description

A woman stands at full length, her weight on one leg and the other foot crossed in front of it. She lifts one arm above her shoulder with a small dark castanet in her fingers; the other hand goes behind her back to the hip. Her hair is bound up with a band, her eyes are lowered and she is half smiling.

Renoir sets her between two broad vertical panels of ochre and cream drapery, with a strip of olive green foliage behind her head. The whole picture is keyed warm: coral and rose in the flesh, gold in the hangings, and green used only as a foil. He signed at the lower left.

This is 1918, the last full year of his life. The drawing is soft to the point of dissolving at the contours, and the figure is held together by colour temperature rather than by line.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes can I order?

Sizes are set by the short edge, from 30 up to 150 centimetres, and the long edge follows this painting's own proportions, so nothing is cropped or stretched. Every option is shown in centimetres and inches. The original measures 53 by 41 centimetres, and an original-size option reproduces those dimensions exactly.

What will it be made of?

A reproduction in the medium you choose. The original, dated 1918, belongs to the Barnes Foundation. The default is a hand-painted oil reproduction, painted in oils on canvas. The alternative is a canvas art print. You then choose the finish: rolled, stretched on a chassis, or set in a thin or a thick frame.

What happens after I order?

It is made for your order in the size, medium and finish you select. The production time for the medium you pick is shown with the options on this page, and shipping is calculated at checkout for your delivery address.
