Description

A red-haired woman lies stretched out on a white cloth spread over the grass, one arm curled behind her head as she dozes in the open air. Renoir turns her body into a long, unbroken curve, the pale flesh glowing against a tangle of autumn bushes in ochre, rust, and deep green rising behind her.

The brushwork is loose and warm throughout, with the foliage dissolving into dabs of gold and copper while a slender tree stands at the right against a hazy sky. The white drapery beneath her catches cool blue-grey shadows that set off the warmth of her skin.
