Description

Bare, pale branches arch overhead like a doorway into a dense, glowing thicket, the interior dropping into near black shadow at its center while the surrounding foliage burns in gold, olive and rust. A narrow path leads the eye straight into that dark opening.

The picture works entirely through contrast, sunlit leaves at the framing edges against an almost impenetrable core of shadow, a Mediterranean tangle of growth painted with unusual density even for Renoir.
