Description
Pierre-Auguste Renoir groups a single orange with its stem leaf still attached alongside two lemons on a rumpled white cloth in this 1913 still life. A small sprig of leaves and a stray blossom rest in the foreground, while a loosely brushed backdrop of olive green, brown, and touches of blue frames the fruit without any fixed setting. Thick, textured strokes build up the rounded volumes of the orange and lemons, giving them a tactile, sun-warmed presence. The painting measures 23.5 by 31.6 centimeters and is held at the Barnes Foundation.
