Description

A nude adolescent boy stands with his back turned, one leg crossed lightly over the other, cradling a large white and tabby cat against his shoulder and cheek. The cat leans into the embrace, paws draped over the boy’s arm, while he tilts his head down to nuzzle it. The pair rest against the rolled arm of a chaise upholstered in a pale fabric printed with blue flowers, all set against an almost black background broken only by a strip of deep green at the lower left.

Renoir models the boy’s smooth, pale skin with soft transitions of light and shadow, letting the dark backdrop throw the figure and the floral upholstery forward. The mood is gentle and unguarded rather than formal, a private moment between a child and his pet.

This reproduction is available as a hand-painted oil or an archival canvas print, made to order in the size you choose and kept true to the proportions of Renoir’s original composition.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order this painting in a custom size?

Yes. Every reproduction of Garcon au chat is made to order in the size you request, and we keep the proportions of Renoir's original composition so the figure is not stretched or cropped.

Is this a printed copy or a painted reproduction?

You can choose between a hand-painted oil reproduction, made stroke by stroke on canvas, or an archival canvas print that reproduces the colors and detail of the original with lasting inks.

How long does production take before shipping?

Because each piece is made to order rather than pulled from stock, please allow production time for painting or printing and stretching before your order ships.
