Description
A calm river fills the lower half of this pale, misty landscape, its still surface reflecting soft washes of blue and gold. Along the far bank a line of slender trees in autumn shades of pale yellow and rose stands against a hazy pink and blue sky, with low hills barely visible in the distance.
The handling throughout is exceptionally soft and thin, the colors almost dissolving into one another, giving the whole scene a quiet, dreamlike stillness rather than the thicker, more textured brushwork Renoir often used outdoors.
The painting is part of the collection of the Barnes Foundation. What is offered here is not that original but a faithful reproduction: a hand-painted oil version on canvas, recreated stroke by stroke by a professional painter, or an archival canvas print made with fade-resistant pigment inks, sized to match the original small study or scaled up for a larger wall.
