Description
Under the flat, bright light of midday, Renoir paints a rolling stretch of dry hillside in warm ochre, rust, and terracotta, with a single small tree standing at the left and pale lavender mountains dissolving into haze along the horizon. Two tiny figures, little more than a few strokes of white and pink, make their way along a pale dirt path that winds through the scrub.
The heat and stillness of noon are suggested through the sunbaked palette and the soft, hazy edges of the distant hills, painted with the loose, warm handling typical of Renoir’s landscape work around 1900.
The painting is part of the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. What is offered here is not that original but a faithful reproduction: a hand-painted oil version on canvas, recreated stroke by stroke by a professional painter, or an archival canvas print made with fade-resistant pigment inks, available in a range of sizes to suit any wall.
