Description
Head of a Young Girl shows a girl in profile, her dark brown hair rolled into a tight coil that curls over her ear. Her face is turned to the right, with soft pink colouring on her cheek and a calm, downward gaze, while her bare shoulder and neck are lit warmly, one strap of a white garment visible at the edge of the shoulder.
Behind her, the background is filled with loosely painted, large red and orange blossoms against a golden-tan ground, giving the portrait a decorative, almost wallpaper-like setting. Renoir’s brushwork is smooth and blended on the girl’s skin, looser and more textured in the flowers behind her.
Painted in 1890 and held at the National Gallery of Art, the original measures 42.6 by 33.3 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, available in a range of sizes to suit any wall.
