Description

This close portrait shows a young woman gazing directly out at the viewer, her brown hair cut in a soft fringe and gathered up above a face rendered in gentle rose and cream tones. Her wide blue eyes and calm expression give the bust an intimate, direct presence.

Her bare shoulders are draped with a loose white cloth, and behind her a green ground is animated with dark, loosely brushed shapes suggesting foliage, alongside a band of deep blue at the edge of the canvas. The whole surface is built from soft, blended strokes typical of Renoir’s portraiture from this period.
