Description
A woman’s head is tilted downward and turned to the side, her features softened into broad patches of warm color rather than sharply drawn lines. A dark blue-gray head covering or hair mass frames her face, with a single stroke of white catching light near the crown, while her cheeks and closed or downcast eyes are built up in reddish-orange and pink tones. The background is a bright, unbroken orange-red, applied in thin, sketchy layers that let the canvas weave show through in places, giving the whole picture an unfinished, immediate quality.
Dated 1917 and held at the Petit Palais, this small, freely worked study shows the loose, almost abstract handling Renoir favored in his very late career.
This reproduction of Tête de femme is available as a hand-painted oil copy on canvas or as an archival giclee print, made to order in a range of sizes close to the original 17.5 x 15.8 cm format or scaled up, and delivered ready to hang.
