Description
Unlike Renoir’s many nude bathers, this beach scene shows women and children fully dressed, wading and playing at the water’s edge. In the foreground two seated figures wear straw hats trimmed with red and white ribbon, watching a cluster of figures splash and reach for each other in the shallows; a hazy rocky coastline glows gold under a pale sky beyond.
Painted around 1892, the picture trades Renoir’s usual bather nudes for a sunlit family outing, built from quick touches of blue, teal and gold. The print keeps the hats’ red and white trim crisp against the looser, more dissolved brushwork of the water and distant shore, so the seated figures stay anchored in the foreground.
