Description

A woman raises both hands to adjust a wide hat piled with orange-red flowers, her yellow dress buttoned to the throat with a red collar and cuffs. Renoir works here in pastel, the strokes left visibly linear rather than blended, against a soft blue ground.

Dated 1883, the drawing pairs its warm yellow and orange against that cool blue background, the pastel medium giving the colour a chalky, matte softness quite different from his oils.
