Description
A young woman is shown in profile, dark hair pulled back, her cheeks flushed pink and her gaze cast downward. She wears a blue dress with an elaborate, wide ruffled collar in white and grey lace that spreads across her shoulders, set against a soft grey-green background.
Painted in 1893 and held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the canvas (55.5 by 46.3 cm) gives nearly as much attention to that ruffled collar as to the face itself, its layered texture built from short, broken strokes. The print keeps the lace distinct and dimensional against the flatter blue dress beneath it, so the collar’s texture doesn’t flatten into a single grey mass.
