Description
A group of bathers gathers by a pool in a lush garden: one stretches across the foreground on white drapery, another stands raising both hands to her hair at the right, and two more figures wade in the water behind, one leaning down toward the surface. A third bather at the left steadies herself against a white cloth.
Painted in 1918 and held by the Barnes Foundation, the canvas (49 by 60 cm) is a late, compact version of the multi-figure bather groupings Renoir returned to throughout his final decade. The print keeps each figure’s pose distinct within the crowded composition, since the picture depends on reading several separate bodies at once rather than one dominant form.
