Description

A bather sits with her back to us, red-gold hair pinned up, reaching one arm out to a white cloth held against dense dark green foliage. Red drapery spills over the seat beside her, and at the lower right a straw hat trimmed with pink and white flowers rests half in shadow.

The canvas (64 by 54 cm) sets the pale, rounded back of the figure against that heavy green backdrop, the red cloth the one strong accent of colour breaking the balance of skin and foliage. The print keeps that red saturated rather than letting it sink into the surrounding dark green, since it is doing real compositional work, not just decoration.
