Description
Two slender tree trunks rise through a canopy of autumn gold, rust and soft green, their leaves dabbed in short, broken strokes against a pale sky. Below, a sandy path curves past a low hedge toward a white picket fence at the right, with distant fields and rooftops just visible through the trees in the background.
Painted in 1884 and held by the Barnes Foundation, the canvas (66.7 by 56.8 cm) is built almost entirely from small, separate touches of colour rather than blended passages, typical of Renoir’s landscape work in this period. The print keeps that broken, dabbed texture distinct in the foliage, so the autumn canopy stays lively rather than settling into a flat wash of orange.
