Description

This is a sketch more than a finished portrait, a child’s face built up fast in a handful of loaded strokes before the paint had time to settle. The hair is a tangle of gold, ochre, and honey-coloured marks, brushed in long strokes that fall past the shoulders, with a small pink or coral bow just visible tucked into it near the forehead.

The eyes are closed, or nearly so, rendered as two dark, quick marks rather than anything studied, and the whole lower face, the round cheeks, the small mouth, sits in warm rose and cream tones that Renoir clearly enjoyed laying down wet into wet. A white ruffled collar is suggested with a few broad, chalky strokes rather than drawn in any detail.

The background is left thin and unresolved, a warm buttery wash on the right giving way to an olive green patch on the left, and a soft charcoal-grey shape behind the head that reads as shadow, or perhaps an abandoned first idea for a hat. You can see the weave of the canvas through the paint in several places, which only adds to the sense of a fast, working study rather than a completed commission. Loose, rapid studies of a child’s head like this sit closer to a private note than a finished commission, and he kept returning to the children in his own household for exactly this kind of quick, unguarded record.

Framed and hung, it has the charm of something caught in the act of being painted, a fragment of gold and rose that would sit well among more finished pieces without ever pretending to be one itself.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes is this small portrait available in?

It is offered in a range of sizes; because the original is a very small, rapid study, enlarging it keeps the quick brushwork visible.

What is the print made on?

It is a giclée print on canvas or fine-art paper, using pigment inks that preserve the sketch-like rapidity of the original brushwork.

How is the print delivered?

Painting time for the hand-painted oil: 2 to 4 weeks. Archival canvas print: 2 to 4 business days. Delivery once shipped: 5 to 7 business days, free and tracked worldwide by express courier (UPS or DHL). It ships rolled in a protective tube, or stretched and ready to hang if you choose that option.
