Description
Painted directly on raw, unprimed canvas that is left visible around the figure, this study shows a young woman with reddish-blonde hair pinned up, leaning forward with her cheek resting on her hand in a thoughtful, downward gaze. She wears a loose mauve-purple wrap that slips open at the shoulder, and behind her Renoir has brushed in quick dabs of yellow and green suggesting foliage or light rather than a finished setting. In the upper corner a second, smaller sketch of a woman’s face appears unfinished, as if the artist was trying the pose again on the same canvas.
The loose, rapid brushwork and exposed weave of the canvas give this piece the feel of a private working sketch rather than a formal portrait, full of the warm flesh tones and soft color harmonies typical of Renoir’s later figure studies.
This work is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction or as an archival canvas print, made to order in a range of sizes that keep the proportions of the original 13.97 x 22.86 cm study, drawn from the version held by the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
